Carbonated filling glossary for buyers.

Understand the technical words used when specifying a carbonated drink filler, bottle line, can line or complete pressure-controlled filling route.

Counter-pressure fillingA filling method where the package is pressurised before product enters, helping reduce CO₂ breakout and foam.
Isobaric fillingA closely related term for filling where the container and product are kept at a controlled pressure balance during the fill.
Fill valveThe controlled product and gas pathway that manages purge, pressure, product flow and venting.
SniftingA controlled pressure-release step used after filling so the pack can be removed or passed to closing with less foam risk.
DODissolved oxygen in the liquid. It matters most where the product is oxygen-sensitive, such as beer, cider or some RTDs.
TPOTotal packaged oxygen. It normally considers oxygen in the liquid and package headspace after filling and closing.
Carbonation volumesA way of describing how much CO₂ is dissolved in the product; the confirmed target should come from the drink specification or a measured sample.
HeadspaceThe space left above the liquid after filling. Its correct size depends on the product, package and closure requirement.
  • A crowner applies crown caps to suitable glass bottles.
  • A screw capper or ROPP capper must match the bottle finish and closure design.
  • A can seamer closes filled cans using the specified can end and seam setup.
  • CIP means cleaning-in-place where the machine design and process allow it; manual cleaning or strip-down may still be required on some routes.

Is counter-pressure the same as isobaric filling?

The terms are closely related in buyer language because both refer to filling under controlled pressure. The exact machine sequence and valve design should be checked from the equipment specification.
