Product preparation

Pre-mix vs post-mix carbonated drink filling.

The route into a carbonated filler changes depending on whether the drink is already mixed and carbonated before filling or whether product preparation equipment is part of the line scope.

In a pre-mix route, the drink is blended and carbonated before it reaches the filler. The filler is then selected to transfer that prepared carbonated product into bottles or cans under controlled pressure. In a post-mix or inline preparation route, water, syrup or ingredients may be proportioned, chilled and carbonated close to the filling stage.

For machinery selection, the key questions are where carbonation happens, how temperature is controlled, whether Brix or recipe ratio matters, how the carbonated product is buffered and how much time passes between product preparation, filling and closure.

Pre-mix tank routeUseful where the finished drink is prepared and held before filling. The transfer line, tank pressure and temperature control need to protect carbonation.
Mixer/carbonator routeUseful where syrup or concentrate is blended with water and carbonated as part of the production cell or line.
Inline proportioning routeRequires greater attention to ratio control, chilling, carbonation and acceptance tests before filled packs are approved.
Compact can-filling routeWhere a compact machine includes an integrated mixing/carbonation module, the supply scope should state what the module controls and what still needs to be provided on site.
Acceptance checksFilled-pack taste, fill level, foam behaviour, carbonation and any Brix or oxygen requirement should be agreed before final acceptance.
  • State whether the drink is supplied to the filler already carbonated.
  • Provide syrup-to-water or recipe-ratio information only where it is relevant to the supplied equipment.
  • Confirm whether chilling, mixing, carbonation and buffer tanks are existing site equipment or part of the requested line.
  • Supply the target pack size, closure route, product temperature and target output.
  • Agree which measurements will be used at FAT or SAT, such as appearance, temperature, fill level, carbonation and closure quality.

Buyer questions

Questions buyers ask about this topic.

Can Lancing supply a filler only if I already have a carbonator?

Yes, but the existing carbonator, tank, transfer line and product temperature still need to be reviewed. A filler-only quotation should confirm how prepared product is delivered under suitable conditions.

Is pre-mix always better than inline preparation?

No. Pre-mix and inline preparation suit different production scales, recipes and site layouts. The best option depends on the drink, batch control, utility provision, quality checks and available space.

Should Brix be part of the filling machine quote?

Brix is relevant when the supplied scope includes mixing, proportioning or carbonated soft-drink preparation. If the filler only receives finished product, Brix may be a product-quality input rather than a filler-control function.

Ready to specify the route?

Send the product, package and output details.

Lancing can review the drink type, carbonation target, container, closure or seam route, target output, utilities and site requirements before recommending the machinery path.
